
Evergreens and shrubs
- Water deeply
- Do not prune until late winter. Do not prune spring flowering shrubs (lilacs, forsythia)
Flower Beds
- Consider allowing perennials to remain standing over the winter to shelter beneficial insects. Do not cut back mums until spring.
- Lift tender bulbs and store (begonias, dahlias, gladiolas).
- Hardy bulbs can be planted until the ground freezes (daffodils, tulips, crocus).
- Hardy annuals can be sown (calendula, bachelor buttons).
Lawns
- Remove only heavy mats of leaves; mulch the remainder.
- Apply fall fertilizer.
- Set the mower to cut lower than usual.
Roses
- Do not feed. Prune back only long or diseased branches.
- Remove dead and diseased material. Do not compost.
- Clean up leaves and other debris under the plant. Apply a fresh layer of compost
Vegetable Gardens
- Weed the beds and compost.
- Remove stakes and cages.
- Remove diseased materials and discard. Do not compost.
- Plant a cover crop.
Tools
- Clean and sharpen tools, including mower blades.
- Drain and store hoses.
- Drain gas from mechanical equipment; move batteries and chargers indoors.
